The Nebraska defense has been playing a good game thus far against Minnesota. Not much has been working for PJ Fleck‘s team and the score shows. To this point, the Golden Gophers only have three points attached to their name.

However, one play caused everything to go sour. Minnesota quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis was dropping back to pass in the third quarter before throwing a strike across the middle. As the FOX camera panned away, you saw Kaliakmanis take a shot.

Turns out, Nebraska defensive lineman Ty Robinson was flagged for targeting, making head-to-head contact with the quarterback. Despite the officials taking the play to replay, there was never much debate. Robinson was ejected from the game after a quick review.

And since the penalty occurred in the second half on Thursday, Robinson will miss the first half of Nebraska’s next game. The Cornhuskers will be traveling to Boulder to renew a bitter rivalry against Colorado. For two quarters next Saturday, head coach Matt Rhule will have to deal without one of his best defensive linemen.

You can check out the entire play from Robinson here.

If you need proof on how highly the Nebraska coaching staff thinks of Robinson, just look at his jersey number. Single digits are only given out to some of the team’s best players. Robinson is wearing No. 9 this season and is expected to make a huge impact.

Unfortunately, Nebraska will have to close out Minnesota and get the game started against Colorado without him. Next time we see Robinson on a football field will be to start the second half at Folsom Field next week. A tough mistake to make this early in the season.

Ty Robinson looking for breakout season with Nebraska

If there is one word to describe Robinson’s time in Lincoln — it would be consistent. Not putting up the biggest numbers in the world but they have all looked similar over the past two years.

Robinson played in all 12 games for Nebraska last season, recording 24 tackles. But as a defensive lineman, his job is to get into the backfield. He had 4.0 tackles for a loss and 2.0 sacks. The hope is to take past success and translate it under Rhule.

If Robinson can continue to elevate his game, a breakout season is going to occur for him. A massive piece to the puzzle along the defensive line if everything goes right.
