Nebraska has a new member on Fred Hoiberg’s staff, as they hire Emmanuel Tommy from Alabama A&M as their new Director of Player Development. Tommy served as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs last year, as they finished with a 12-18 record overall and a 10-8 record in SWAC play.

Nebraska hires Emmanuel Tommy

“Nebraska’s Fred Hoiberg has hired Emmanuel Tommy as Director of Player Development,” stated CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein on Tuesday.

Tommy wasted no time switching over his own social media account with the news, changing his profile picture on Twitter to a Nebraska Cornhuskers logo. Tommy brings 15 years of experience as a coach to Nebraska, serving as Director of Basketball Operations for McNeese State during the 2020-21 season before joining Alabama A&M.

Tommy began his college coaching career after spending six seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Godwin Heights High School. During his time with his high school as a coach, Godwin Heights went 158-12, winning seven conference titles, five district titles and four regional titles — as well as the 2015 Michigan Class B State Championship.

Before joining McNeese State’s staff, Tommy was on South Alabama’s staff for the 2019 season, as they went 20-11 overall and 13-7 in Sun Belt play — the first 20-win season by the program since 2008. Tommy was an assistant coach under coach Greg Mason at Division III Centre College prior to joining South Alabama, helping lead them to a 23-5 season and a championship.

Nebraska will look to Tommy to help improve their record in Hoiberg’s fourth season with the Cornhuskers. Last year Nebraska won ten games under Hoiberg for the first time, finishing 10-22 on the season. Nebraska has failed to reach the NCAA Tournament for eight-straight years after reaching the second round in the 2013-14 season.
