It seems as if new head coach Matt Rhule will be bringing one of his long-time assistants with him to Nebraska. According to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, Ed Foley is “expected” to join the Cornhuskers’ staff. The two worked together in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers and back to Rhule coaching for Temple.

“SOURCE: Ed Foley who coached with Matt Rhule at Temple, Baylor, and with the Panthers working with special teams, is expected to join the Nebraska coaching staff,” Feldman said via Twitter.

Foley was an assistant special teams coach for the Panthers, being there for the two-and-a-half years Rhule was. He occupied multiple roles at Temple under Rhule and stayed on staff after the head coach left for Baylor.

Eventually, he earned the interim tag with the Owls but left the following season. He moved down to Waco and reconnected with Rhule, working as an analyst.

Sean Callahan of On3’s Huskers Online weighed in on Foley being hired, saying the exact position of Foley is not yet known. Rhule will have 10 full-time hires to work with but Foley could very well end up an analyst for the Nebraska program.

“Another new hire,” Callahan said. “Ed Foley was an assistant special teams coach at Carolina and an analyst for Rhule at Baylor. Unknown if this is an analyst hire or full time 10 hire at this point.”

Matt Rhule signs long-term contract with Nebraska

After a failed experiment in the NFL, Matt Rhule is back in college football. This time, he will be taking his talents to the Big Ten West and be the latest to attempt to rebuild the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Rhule knows a big task is ahead of him and to back him, athletic director Trev Alberts has given the head coach a huge contract.

Nebraska and Rhule agreed to an eight-year, $74 million deal, it was announced during Monday’s introductory press conference. This puts him in the top level of head coaches in the Big Ten, competing with the likes of Jim Harbaugh at Michigan and Ryan Day at Ohio State.

Arguably more important, Rhule will have a $7 million assistant pool to work with. Some of the hires have already been reported on and announced, as the Cornhuskers begin a new era in Lincoln with Rhule at the helm.

As Rhule continues to fill out the staff, he will need to hit the ground running. The NCAA transfer portal will be opening on Sunday while recruiting never stops in college football. An important month is ahead of the Nebraska program, even if it’s early.
