The Nebraska Cornhuskers and head coach Scott Frost were in a much better mood following their victory against North Dakota in Week 1. After the Cornhuskers suffered a heartbreaking loss in their season opener last week against Northwestern, they put together a much better performance this week, defeating the Fighting Hawks 38-17.

Following their practice on Monday, Frost was in a chipper mood, even cracking a joke or two about his tight ends. One of those was a funny ribbing of Nate Boerkircher while noting the progress of the tight end room.

“Yeah, they gave Boerkircher a lot of crap for being nervous and dropping the first ball. But he settled in and played really well,” said Frost.Chancellor Brewington is a special kid. He’s tough and can do about anything we ask him. He played really well too. AJ [Rollins] got quite a few snaps, and that was good to get him his first experience. We’re looking forward to having Travis back real soon.

The Cornhuskers were without their star tight end and favorite target in Week 0 of quarterback Casey Thompson, Travis Vokolek. Vokolek went down with an ankle injury in the second half of Nebraska’s game against Northwestern, which is why Boerkircher got the starting nod. Boerkircher did have the drop, but he did catch one of Thompson’s two touchdown passes. He finished the game with two catches for 32 yards and the touchdown.

Frost also gave a huge shoutout to Brewington for the effort he gives when blocking.

“Yeah, I can make a highlight tape already of him making some impactful and impressive blocks. He’s a selfless kid. He does anything we ask him and is one of the toughest guys on the team. I have a ton of respect and admiration for him.”

Thompson responds to Scott Frost’s challenge that this Cornhuskers team isn’t great but can be

Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson knows he and his teammates still have a lot of work to do. After the Cornhuskers defeated North Dakota on Saturday, coach Scott Frost described his team as “still finding our way.”

Thompson agreed with that statement, pointing out that Nebraska is still trying to build its chemistry with so many new faces this season — himself included.

“We’re still getting to work together,” Thompson said postgame Saturday. “This is a team with 30 new players between freshmen and transfers. Half of the staff are new coaches. We’re still rotating guys on offense. New starters on defense, new starters on special teams. So it’s good for us to get the win today. I definitely think practice is one thing, but working together in the game is a whole different thing. Going to battle, going to war with guys you find out you can trust and lean on.”
