Nebraska 'waiting on Big Ten' in regards to Turner Corcoran penalty

The Nebraska Cornhuskers had one player in their 35-21 victory over Indiana disqualified from the game. The most common way college players get ejected from a game is because of targeting fouls. However, in the second quarter, offensive tackle Turner Corcoran was disqualified for two unsportsmanlike penalties, which came on back-to-back plays. The latter of the two came when Corcoran appeared to throw a punch at a downed Indiana player. Interim head coach Mickey Joseph was asked about his thoughts on the situation and he made sure to carefully choose his words.

“Well, we’re waiting on the Big Ten right now; we’re waiting on a Big Ten before I comment on it,” said Joseph. “Because I don’t want to say I feel and then the Big Ten say something. I don’t want to get some bad enemies because I said something I had no business saying. So, I’m not going to comment on it right now. I’ll let them comment first.”

Because of the potential seriousness of the Cornhuskers’ offensive lineman’s actions, the Big Ten is looking into the situation to see if further discipline is required. Now that it is in the hands of the conference, all Nebraska can do is wait until a verdict is made.

While you can clearly see that the Cornhuskers’ offensive lineman makes contact with the downed player’s helmet (facemask), it looks like it was an open hand, not a punch.

Nebraska starting left tackle Turner Corcoran disqualified following unsportsmanlike penalties

On a promising drive late in the second quarter, in hopes of building on their 21-14 lead at the time, the Cornhuskers found themselves having to punt after multiple penalties stalled their drive. The two most significant ones were back-to-back unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on their starting left tackle, Turner Corcoran.

Corcoran picked up the two penalties, the first after a late hit on an Indiana defender and the second after throwing a punch. As a result of the two unsportsmanlike penalties, the Cornhuskers left tackle is now disqualified from the game. As mentioned above, it also stalled out a solid drive they were putting together, forcing Nebraska to punt. The Hoosiers managed to score a touchdown just before the half.
