Nebraska decided to rip the band-aid off with Scott Frost, relieving him of his head coaching duties on Sunday. There was thought Oct. 1 would be the date due to a significant drop in the buyout. Instead, athletic director Trev Alberts will get the coaching search underway sooner rather than later.

Some top names have already been linked with the job, including Urban Meyer and Matt Campbell. However, Joe Mogila has thrown out an endorsement for Coastal Carolina‘s Jamey Chadwell to be the one tasked to bring the Huskers back to prominence.

“It doesn’t surprise me that Coach Chadwell would be one of the names linked with the Nebraska job, or any other top job for that matter,” Mogila said via Twitter. “I was contacted a couple weeks ago by someone close to the decision making process and was asked my thought with regard to a replacement.

“I said Jamey has done a great job for us at Coastal Carolina, I love him, and we would not want to lose him, but he would absolutely get the job done at Nebraska.”

Mogila is a former Coastal Carolina coach as well but in the state of Nebraska, is most well known for his work with TD Ameritrade. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Mogila is someone who has “a lot of credibility” in the state.

Chadwell has been mentioned by On3’s HuskerOnline as well, being placed in the “others to watch category” in the Hot Board 1.0. There has been plenty of success with Coastal Carolina, having a 32-19 record over four seasons. The peak came during the 2020 season, going undefeated during the regular season and winning the Sun Belt.

Coastal Carolina has begun the season 2-0, although both have been in close fashion. His current success and prior history now has the potential to take him to one of the top jobs in the country.

Nebraska AD Trev Alberts discusses Scott Frost era

Alberts went back to the coaching cycle in which Frost was hired, saying he was one of the top names at that time. He thought Frost would have had more success, but now Alberts is looking to move forward.

“You know, I haven’t put a lot of thought into that,” Alberts said when asked about what went wrong. “But I thought it would work. Listen, we all have short memories but Scott Frost was among the absolute leaders in that cycle of coaching. Scott’s a good football coach, Scott’s going to go on and be a successful coach. I told him that this morning and he agreed. Scott’s a good football coach. The right situation for him will emerge and I think he’ll be very successful.

“I was very determined to work with him and try to balance that very delicate balance of not meddling – because I think it’s the last thing an administration should do is start dictating the coaches and how they operate their deal – but be supportive. But it is what it is. It didn’t work and that’s why we’re here today.”
