A five-star recruit in the Class of 2020, linebacker MJ Sherman started his career with the Georgia Bulldogs. Since then, he’s transferred to Nebraska. However, he is always going to feel the impact that Georgia had on his career.

As Sherman explained, it came down to the mentorship he received from players on those vaunted Georgia defenses.

“I mean, I’ve got million dollar friends,” MJ Sherman smiled. “You know what I mean? And what I mean by that is that I’ve seen a lot of guys that I call my brother to this day that grind and work hard in my position or other positions similar to mine to be where they’re at right now. So, like, just watching them, learning from them, asking them questions, doing stuff like that.”

As Sherman explained, he still has that mentality and is trying to do that at Nebraska now. The major difference is that he’s one of the older guys now.

“The same thing I do here. When I feel like I did a play, I can run off to the side, ‘Hey, did you watch it? Did you see it? What’s something you critique me on?’ Same thing I did over there with my big bros. I guess now I’m a bigger brother.”

So, while it probably felt good for MJ Sherman to win a couple of national championship rings while at Georgia, it was a much bigger deal to build relationships and develop as a player there.

MJ Sherman on his Nebraska commitment

For MJ Sherman, the decision to leave Georgia and go to Nebraska was an anxious one. Still, he knew he was doing the right thing by following a dream that he and Matt Rhule have for the program.

“I mean, there’s not a concrete answer on why Nebraska. But I understood that Nebraska is a team that’s fighting to make another impact on the college football world and I feel like I have the skills and everything about me that can help this team do that,” Sherman said.

“So, Coach Rhule’s got a dream. I’ve got a dream as well. So, I just always want to win games and have an impact on this team as much as the college football world.”

While he doesn’t want to sound selfish, MJ Sherman is also convinced that Nebraska is the best place for him to be as an individual right now.

“The opportunities. I’m not trying to be selfish or sound like I’m all about me or anything like that because I really do what to win games and win bowl games here and bring a lot of success here in this facility, which is absolutely deserved because of the work ethic of this team,” Sherman said. “But yes, the opportunities that lay here were pretty convincing for me.”
