Sam Griesel’s long-time dream of becoming a Nebraska Cornhusker came true on Sunday.

Griesel, grew up in Lincoln, just minutes from the University of Nebraska’s campus. He would’ve loved to have been a Cornhusker post-high school graduation, but the offer was never extended, meaning more work had to be done.

The 6-foot-6 guard took his talents to North Dakota State, where he played four seasons for the Bison. This past year, Griesel averaged 14.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists on 48.2% from the field. The impressive stat line earned him a spot on the All-Summit League first team.

Last Tuesday, after the conclusion of the season, Grisel entered the transfer portal. He was contacted by plenty of high-majors, including Virginia, Creighton, Ohio State, Minnesota, Penn State, Notre Dame, Stanford, and several others. But one school stood out in particular: Nebraska, of course.

One of the first calls Griesel received was from Nebraska head coach, Fred Hoiberg. The Lincoln native spoke highly about the head man in a recent interview.

“Fred Hoiberg is a name that I’ve known for a long time and a name that’s well-known in the coaching business, and it’s really cool that he has NBA experience as a player and a coach,” Griesel said.
