Nebraska tight end Travis Vokolek spoke about the changes he’s noticed in the offense under new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple. The Cornhuskers brought in Whipple to perform a significant amount of work on head coach Scott Frost’s staff, including offensive coordinator, assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach.

Prior to accepting the job with Nebraska, Whipple coached Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett in a season that saw him be named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. Pitt ranked third in the nation in scoring and fifth in passing offense with Whipple.

“Coach Whipple came in — [I] really like Coach Whip. He’s a great guy, good guy to talk to. You can have honest conversations with him,” said Vokolek. “He’s bringing an offense that personally I’m a big fan of. Lots of opportunities for the tight ends to go out and make plays, as well as receivers and running backs. It puts our playmakers in perfect position to go out there and give them the opportunity to make plays.”

Vokolek was then asked if the Nebraska offense had changed schematically in any way, but he shared that the scheme wasn’t something dramatically new to the players.

“It’s a little different, but it’s a little the same of what we did last year. There’ll be many ways we’ll have tight ends out in space. We’ll be in line as well — it’ll be fun, you guys will see it.”

Nebraska defensive back Quinton Newsome was also on the interview desk alongside Vokolek, and he shared what it was like to defend the new Nebraska offense — highlighting that they were getting good looks at things they’d never seen before.

“It’s always a great look man,” added Newsome. “It’s just so many things that they bring into us that we’ve never seen before. Even when it comes to one-on-ones they bring us different routes and whenever we do teams … it’s gonna be something we’ve never seen before. Different concepts. I think that it’s great to see out of the offense, I can’t wait to see what they do.”
