Scott Frost reveals Alante Brown stepping up as leader in wide receiver room

Nebraska football is reloading at wide receiver. Last year, despite a poor overall record, the Cornhuskers could really light up the scoreboard on occasion, especially via the passing game. However, they’ll need to overhaul their receiver room in a major way heading into 2022. Because following last season, the Huskers said goodbye to four of their five leading receivers, including the top two targets on the team. Massive blow to Scott Frost’s offensive unit.

Add in the fact that Nebraska also lost its stellar quarterback, Adrian Martinez, to Kansas State by way of the Transfer Portal, and this offense is looking at a mammoth rebuild of its passing game. These guys are basically starting from scratch.

So, they need some of the underclassmen to step up as they ascend to more of a veteran status. Bringing in former Texas starter Casey Thompson at quarterback helps alleviate some of the experience issues. However, the wideouts are simply going to be a young and fairly unproven bunch. According to Scott Frost, though, one guy in particular among the WRs is stepping up and leading by example for the rest of the room.

At a recent press conference, he updated the state of the pass catching crew and revealed the player who’s garnered the most respect thus far through camp. Here were his initial comments on the personalities of the locker room among receivers:

“Yeah, you know, it’s hard to come into a new program and immediately be the leader. Now, we have some strong personalities that are new guys in that room. Guys that people gravitate to because of the type of personality.”

But who has become the guy that other players are turning to?

Alante Brown has been doing a really good job kind of being a leader right now. And he gets along with everybody. There’s not anybody on the team with a better work ethic than him. And he kind of sets the example for everybody else right now.”

Great personality and ability to get along with others: Check! Leads by example by working hard: Check! Really don’t need anything more than that from a team leader.

Now, Brown still has proof to provide on the field, because the third-year wideout wasn’t much of a factor his first two seasons. He occasionally fielded punts throughout the last couple years, but in 2021, only hauled in three catches for 30 total yards.

If Frost’s comments are any indication, though, he’s on his way for tenfold (or better) of that sort of production.
