Nebraska head coach Scott Frost broke down who the Cornhuskers will follow for leadership after the team voted on their captains. The team held a vote for who they wanted to be captains over a week ago, and Frost revealed the four most-voted players and how the entire process developed.

Leading Nebraska this season will be linebacker Nick Henrich, edge rushers Garrett Nelson and Caleb Tannor, and tight end Travis Vokolek.

“Excited to announce captains … We had the vote about a week and a half ago, and there was a lot of guys that got votes,” said Frost. “Which is a good thing, I think that means that we have a lot of leaders on the football team. But the four top vote getters were Garrett and Travis and Caleb and Nick. Really proud of that group — where they’ve come from, what they’ve become and the leadership they’re giving us.

“All four guys have graduated from the university already, including Nick [who] graduated in three years. Two and a half of them are home-grown Nebraska kids. Obviously Garrett and Nick, but Travis’ family is from Lincoln too. And then Caleb from Georgia. They’re gonna do a great job representing us, and the leadership that they’ve shown in camp along with about a dozen other guys has been the best we’ve ever had.”

Frost went on to explain later that the decision to name captains was based on the top vote-earners, regardless of their offensive or defensive positions. With three of the four team captains playing on the defensive side of the ball, Frost noted that their growth on defense via recruiting has led to them leading the team.

“I think it’s important to note the culture on the defense has been growing for a while and not a lot of change over there has helped us,” explained Frost. “The kids we recruited have really developed into the type of guy you want on your football team. We kind of intentionally did it that way, I didn’t want to just necessarily say there was two offensive guys and two defensive guys — we wanted to pick the four best leaders. There were several other offensive guys that got votes, several other defensive guys that got votes. But these four guys got the most and I think along with some of those other guys I was talking about, they’re gonna provide good leadership for us.”
