It’s flight tracker season in college football, which means it’s time to speculate about all those Unidentified Flying Football Coaches who are darting all over the country. According to The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman, Nebraska football might have flown in former Baylor and Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule to interview for the head coaching job.

He wrote that “a private jet, registered to an Omaha trucking company that has provided significant financial support to the [Nebraska] football program, flew Monday from Omaha to Charlotte, N.C.” Charlotte being Rhule’s home since he was most recently coaching the Panthers, who play in Charlotte.

Will Compton added more fuel to the Matt Rhule fire, tweeting on Tuesday, “I’m hearing Matt Rhule is currently in Nebraska and the connection is strong with the Huskers.” Sounds like he may be interviewing for the job right now.

A lot of hints pointing to Rhule being a very serious candidate for the Cornhuskers head coaching gig.

More on Rhule, coaching situation

Nebraska didn’t wait long this fall to send head coach Scott Frost out the door. A 1-2 start which included losses to Northwestern and Georgia Southern was enough for Cornhuskers brass to call it quits on a truly terrible era of Nebraska football. Given the program’s history, five losing seasons in a row is completely unacceptable. Yet, that’s the Scott Frost era. He took the job and proceeded to finish with four straight losing seasons, and started out 1-2 before being canned. Just a rough run for Frost and the Nebraska football program.

Nebraska is turning the page, and the name of the next chapter of Cornhusker football may be the Matt Rhule era, at least judging by these reports. Rhule couldn’t find success in Carolina during his few seasons there. Though, his quarterback play was among the worst in the entire NFL, which isn’t totally his fault. Hopefully he can bring back that spark he had when he coached Baylor to great heights before bolting for the NFL.
