Darrion Williams, a 6-foot-6 power forward out of Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, has committed to the Nevada Wolf Pack, he tells On3.

Williams chose the Wolf Pack over scholarship offers from Montana, Eastern Washington, Weber State, and Long Beach State.

Williams breaks down his decision

The Bishop Gorman power forward tripped to the University of Nevada last weekend for an official visit, where he says he “just fell in love with it.”

He broke down that trip and his decision with On3.

“It was great,” Williams explained. “I got to sit through their practice, but I couldn’t go to one of their games, unfortunately. I watched how they lift, I met their strength and conditioning guy, met with all the coaches. And I had already met most of the coaches because they had come down to see me at some point. So it was cool seeing them again. I met some of the guys and the culture there was amazing. The guys had fun. Coach Alford’s mom came around and they all showed love to her, and that’s how I like it. I like the family environment. They have a couple of courses that I’m interested in. They have all-world facilities and an all-world coaching staff.”

What’s the No. 1 reason Williams is choosing Nevada?

“I would say the love they showed for me,” Williams said. “I’ve been talking to them for a little while, and it did take them a little while to offer, but they’ve always told me how much they like me and how much they know I can fit in there. That, paired with all their coaching history, all the championships, all the coaching pedigree.”

Williams’ favorite part of the visit?

“I’d have to say when the guys on the team, went out of their way to say hi and what’s up to me, and introduce themselves at the end of their practice. That stood out to me.”

What will Williams bring to the Wolf Pack?

“I’ll be able to bring some shooting, basketball IQ, a guy that wants to work, and someone that adds to the culture and adds to the team. Just good vibes and no drama. I’m just looking to hoop and win.”

Williams describes his game as being able to do “anything” on the court. “I can defend all five positions, play point, big, I can play a lot of different positions.”

On3 saw Darrion Williams play at Hoophall West in December. Shockingly, he didn’t have a single scholarship offer at the time.

“I worked hard for this. I kind of got hurt at the wrong time over the summer but I’ve been in the gym a lot, rehabbing, working on my leg, and working on my body. My body has changed a lot since freshman year. That’s probably what I’m most proud of, my transformation.”

A fresh take

Shedrick Everett, better known as ‘Sed’ is a player development and skills coach in the Las Vegas area. He has worked with Darrion Williams, along with others like the G-League Ignite’s Jaden Hardy, Michigan’s Frankie Collins, LSU’s Mwani Wilkinson, UCLA’s Will McClendon, and plenty of others.

Coach Sed gave his take on Darrion’s commitment and additional details on who he is as a player:

Upon moving to Vegas, Darrion had one goal in mind and that was to become a Division 1 basketball player. Loaded with skill and potential, D added the work ethic both on the court and in the weight room. Transformed his body and has shown to be the best 3 level scorer and versatile defenders in the state. I am excited for him and happy for his family, as he now he has a chance to be what I think he can be, and that is a PROGRAM CHANGER at the collegiate level.

This year, D has led nationally ranked powerhouse Bishop Gorman to a 29-0 record, and 5A Southern Region Championship and now has a chance to win a state title. Some of his accomplishments thus far this season include: 5A Southern Region Co-Player of the Year, Tarkanian Classic MVP, Hoophall West Showcase MVP, and Torrey Pines Holiday Classic MVP.
