Chris Olave and Justin Fields built quite a connection at Ohio State. With the NFL Draft looming — and the Chicago Bears needing a wide receiver — a reunion can’t be ruled out.

Prior to the NFL Combine, Olave voiced his support for that to happen. It won’t be easy, though.

The Bears don’t have a first-round pick this year, trading it to the New York Giants last year to move up and draft Fields. One of the biggest questions Chicago has to answer is who Fields’ top wide receiver will be if Allen Robinson doesn’t come back in free agency. Olave could be an option, whether it be by trading up or if he falls to the Bears at No. 39 overall.

The former Buckeyes star sure sounded excited at the idea of connecting with Fields again.

“Oh yeah, definitely,” Olave said, via NBC Sports Chicago’s Adam Hoge. “Having him in college as my quarterback, I know what he can do on-and-off the field and I know how hard he works. I feel like we’re very similar in ways and I feel like we can complement each other if we do end up on the same team.”

More on Chris Olave, Justin Fields

In seven games in 2020, Fields and Olave connected for 729 yards and seven touchdowns as Ohio State made a run to the College Football Playoff national championship game. Bringing that connection to Chicago would be quite a boost for new coach Matt Eberflus and Co. as they get ready for their first season on the lakefront.

In ESPN analyst Mel Kiper’s latest Mock Draft, he projects Olave to go No. 23 overall to the Arizona Cardinals. That’s a change from Kiper’s Mock Draft 1.0, where he had Olave going No. 19 to the Philadelphia Eagles. With the NFL Combine coming this week, Olave has a chance to increase his draft stock — and maybe farther away from Chicago’s No. 39 pick.

Fields is coming off an up-and-down first season in the NFL with the Bears under Matt Nagy. He threw for 1,870 yards and seven touchdowns, but had 10 interceptions and completed just 58.9% of his passes. He was also sacked 36 times.

But things are changing in Chicago. The Bears fired Nagy after the season and brought in Eberflus, the former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator. Eberflus then hired Luke Getsy to become offensive coordinator after serving as the Green Bay Packers’ quarterbacks coach — and he’ll be in charge of Fields’ development in 2022.
