Ohio State again loses plenty talent to the NFL Draft as it prepares for the next season, including some veteran edge rushers who will have their role filled by the latest five-star prospects to enter the building. With two sophomores expected to take on an increased role, how the defense plays could hinge on their progression.

During a media session last week, new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles was asked about former five-star defensive edge rushers Jack Sawyer and JT Tuimoloau. He started with a response on his expectations for Sawyer next season.

“Everything, I expect Jack to be able to do everything,” said Knowles. “To be able to play any of the defensive ends’ positions, to be able to play our Jack position, to learn the system well enough to move into that Leo role. I think he’s got great potential. I like his attitude, I like his toughness, so I just expect him to continue the work he did in the spring and be great.

Jim Knowles immediately received the same question aimed at JT Tuimoloau and took the opportunity to speak on Jack Sawyer in addition to him as a unit. Coming in to watch the duo over the past several months, the new coordinator sees big things in their future.

“Everything,” said Knowles. “These are two guys that do not have limitations. They do not have limitations. And it’s my job to grow them, to put them into the different positions to succeed, to be able to utilize those skills to the fullest. But there’s no limits on their success.”
