Ohio State nearly had an interception in the second quarter of Saturday’s game against Tulsa. True freshman defensive back Denzel Burke appeared to wrestle the ball away from a Golden Hurricane receiver for the turnover.

But the play went to official review, where it was somehow ruled a Tulsa catch. Burke could not understand how that was ruled an interception, while Ohio State coach Ryan Day was heated and demanded the officials to explain the call.

The Tulsa receiver showed no control of the ball in the replay.

Burke has started the opening three games of his Buckeyes career. A four-star prospect, he was the No. 277 overall prospect in On3’s 2021 rankings.

The Buckeyes are coming off of an upset loss to Oregon at the Horseshoe. Ohio State dropped to 1-1 and No. 9in the AP top-25 poll after its defense struggled slow down the Ducks offense.

Oregon running back CJ Verdell had 20 carries and turned it into a whopping 161 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, Verdell had 34 receiving yards on three catches and another receiving touchdown.

Buckeyes offensive lineman, captain exits vs. Tulsa

All signs point to Ohio State missing a preseason All-American offensive lineman for the remainder of Saturday’s game. Offensive guard Thayer Munford exited the Buckeyes game against Tulsa in the first quarter with the help of trainers.

An apparent leg injury, he limped off the field but needed two trainers to help. He then headed to the medical tent before being carted to the locker room.

A leader for the Buckeyes, Munford is a team captain and this year’s representative of the Block O jersey. Matthew Jones entered as Munford’s substition at left guard.

He switched from left tackle, where he started the past three seasons for the Buckeyes, to left guard this offseason as Dawand Jones earned a starting role at right tackle. Ohio State has reshuffled its offensive line, trying to play the top-five offensive lineman instead of the best player at each position. The Buckeyes have also been without expected starting center Harry Miller in the opening three games.
