Quarterback Battle Already Heating Up As Buckeyes Begin Spring Ball This Week Ohio State Football

New Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has led a number of different position groups on both sides of the ball during his coaching career.

Kelly has now taken over the role as quarterbacks coach for the Buckeyes, in addition to being the offensive coordinator.

The 60-year-old has worked with quarterbacks before while leading an offense, but this will mark his first time truly being the quarterbacks coach for a team.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day was asked Tuesday why he trusts Chip Kelly to lead Ohio State’s quarterbacks.

“I mean, he’s coached it all for so long. He was my quarterbacks coach,” Ryan Day said. “And even back in the NFL, he had a huge hand in a lot of the quarterback meetings. He would sit in on the meetings. And I think even back when I played, he coached all kinds of different positions. I think that’s what gave him the point of view of seeing it from All 22.”

Ryan Day and Chip Kelly have had a relationship for years, dating back to when Kelly coached Day at the University of New Hampshire. Kelly was the offensive coordinator for Day, then later was on staff with Day as Day started his coaching career.

Day loves that Kelly has experience coaching so many different positions.

“I think sometimes guys get caught up in one position and they can kind of get a little bit narrow minded,” Day said. “He sees it all, has seen it all for a long time, has a great feel for it.”

Day believes it will be beneficial for Ohio State for Kelly to coach quarterbacks. He expects him to have a strong relationship with Buckeyes quarterbacks, which will help out everyone.

“You know, when you’re the play caller, you want to be lockstep with the quarterback, because there’s just certain things that when you’re calling a play, ‘we went over that in the meeting, and I’m calling this play for this reason,” Day explained.

“And when the quarterback understands, ‘This is why it’s being called for these types of reasons,’ it’s already been covered in the meeting. And if you’re in those meetings then you have intimate details on what exactly is being said. It allows you to call the game with more confidence, making sure that both guys are on the same page. Because those are the two guys that have to be on the same page.”
