Ohio State sophomore defensive lineman Jacolbe Cowan is looking for a new home, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz. The 2020 signee is now in the NCAA transfer portal following spring practices in Columbus.

Cowan, a Charlotte, North Carolina, native, was one of 10 Buckeyes who missed all 15 practices during the offseason. In two years with the program, the 6-foot-4, 272-pound defensive tackle accumulated three tackles in three games played, all during the 2021 season.

He had one tackle in each game versus Michigan State, Indiana and Maryland. After getting a free year from the NCAA for 2020, Cowan has several years of eligibility left.

Jacolbe Cowan committed to Ryan Day and Ohio State in 2019 over offers from 37 other D-I programs. He was a standout player at Providence Day School, accumulating 57 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, 37 quarterback hurries and three forced fumbles as a senior.

Cowan joins throng entering portal after spring practices

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal goes through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship is no longer valid. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school does not have to reoffer a scholarship.
