Ohio State wrestling coach Tom Ryan was injured in an automobile accident Tuesday morning on his way to campus, the University has announced.

Ryan suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the Wexner Medical Center.

No one else was injured in the crash. Here is the full statement from Ohio State:

“Ohio State University wrestling coach Tom Ryan was involved in an automobile accident Tuesday morning on his commute to campus. He was transported to the Wexner Medical Center.

His injuries are non-life threatening, and no one else was hurt at the scene. University and department of athletics staff members have Tom and his family on their thoughts.”

Tom Ryan has been the head coach at Ohio State since 2006 and has enjoyed incredible success during that time, including leading the Buckeyes to the 2015 national championship.

Ohio State was also the national runner-up in 2008, 2009, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Tom Ryan was named the National Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2015 and the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2015, 2017 and 2018.

Tom Ryan says NCAA Wrestling needs Dual Meet Championships

On3’s Nick Kosko spoke with Ryan last year about his program and NCAA wrestling in general.

During that conversation, Ryan was emphatic about college wrestling creating a dual meet championship.

Right now, the NCAA only sanctions an individual championship, held over three days to determine national champions and All-Americans at each of the 10 weight classes. Based on the team scoring at the tournament, that’s how you determine the team national champion.

But the sport needs more, according to Ryan.

“So I think that wrestling is the greatest sport on Earth,” Ryan told On3. “And I think that we need a plan which we don’t really have, in my opinion, we don’t have a plan. The focus of the season should be about what team wins their dual meet conference championship. That weekend should be the same for every conference. We have a build up. There should be an RPI for teams. And if you win your conference, you get an automatic bid into the National Dual Meet Championship.

“There are also wildcards. If you’re in the Big Ten and you’re ranked fourth in the country, but your third in your conference, you may get a wildcard into the National Dual Meet Championship. So there’s no question we need a dual meet championship.”
