Ryan Day knows that expectations are always going to be high at Ohio State. He also knows that, because of those expectations, anything less than winning the Big Ten and playing for a national championship is a disappointment for the Buckeyes. Losing to Michigan is unacceptable.

“Well, every year the expectations are high,” Ryan Day said during Big Ten Media days. “You know, and that doesn’t change based on what happened the year before. The expectation is to win them all and that’s…just the way it is.”

Of course, expectations aren’t just high at Ohio State. They’re astronomical and Ryan Day tried to explain this the best he could.

“So, you know, maybe some places 11-2 with a Rose Bowl victory is a good year. It isn’t at Ohio State.”

“So, our three goals are to beat the team up north, win the Big Ten Championship, and win a national championship,” Ryan Day emphasized. “That’s the goal and those three things didn’t happen last year. So, that didn’t change this year, next year, or the year before.”

How Ohio State can reach its goals

It’s easy to say you have lofty expectations. It’s another thing to actually achieve them, and if a national championship is the standard, then Ohio State hasn’t had a successful season since 2014. Ryan Day also addressed how the Buckeyes can have a successful season in 2022.

“Just a different team–a different group of guys–more experienced,” explained Ryan Day. “Again, when you think about those first few games last year, we just had a lot of young guys. And now we’ve gone through a whole season and offseason together. I think our guys are a little scarred–a little calloused. They know what it’s like to lose a game and that’s not fun. And, so, we remind our guys about that, regularly. We also know that we have to move forward and focus on what’s coming next.”

Only time will tell if Ohio State can reach its goals in 2022. They’ll kick off with a difficult out-of-conference game against Notre Dame on September 3, 2022.
