Ohio State revamped more than its roster this offseason. The storied program also loaded up on coaching talent, specifically on the offensive side of the ball. On Tuesday, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day raved about the Buckeyes’ new staff on offense.

“It has the potential to be the best offensive staff in the country, and that’s what our goal should be,” Day said. “We’re at Ohio State. We want to have the best offensive line room, the best running backs room, the best DBs room. We also have one of the best staff. I think if we make the right hire here, we do that.”

Day and Co. made a massive hire this offseason when they named former UCLA head coach Chip Kelly the team’s next offensive coordinator. The school initially hired former New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. However, the position became vacant again when O’Brien accepted an offer to become Boston College’s next head coach.

Kelly spent the past six seasons leading the charge at UCLA. Kelly went 35-34 during his time with Bruins, concluding his tenure with three consecutive winning campaigns. Day is excited to see what Kelly can bring to OSU.

“I’m going to step back away from the offense but, at the same time, I’m still going to be around too. I think it’s exciting to still be a part of all that,” Day said. “But, watching Chip run it is going to be great.

“I think when you look at the guys and the potential and the talent, the mixture of experience and energy we have in the room — to me I look across the country, everybody else’s staff, I feel like this has a chance to be the best one.”

Kelly won’t be the only fresh face on Ohio State’s offensive coaching staff. Earlier this month, Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford left the program to serve in a similar role at arch-rival Michigan. For now, Ryan Day is coaching the running backs but he intends to hire a new coach soon.

“Was made aware last week and so now we’re into the process of identifying replacements,” Day said. “Excited about the group that we’ve already identified and gonna be thorough in the process. I think the good news is we’re not in a situation where we have to make a quick decision based on recruiting, or the portal, or anything like that.”
