As Ohio State football begins spring practice, the players who suffered injuries last season continue working their way back into the team. For wide receiver Kam Babb, time spent in the rehab process has become more common that time spent on the football field with a bad string of injuries throughout his career.

After suffering a torn ACL for the fourth time in five years during 2021 spring practice, Babb still held a spot as one of Ohio State’s six captains. During a Tuesday press conference which immediately followed practice, head coach Ryan Day provided an injury update on Kam Babb, along with a glowing endorsement.

“Right now, he’s a full-go,” said Day. “I could talk for hours about Kam Babb and what he’s done being a captain and everything he’s been through. So we’re Kam Babb fans around here. Everybody loves Kam and he had a really good practice today. We’ll just keep pushing forward and if he can stay healthy, he’s gonna have an impact on this offense for sure.”

Despite recording no official stats as a member of Ohio State’s team, he remains a locker room presence and team leader. Returning as a graduate student after arriving on campus as a four-star recruit, 2022 could be his first chance to make an impact on the field.

Ohio State must replace significant production at the position this offseason, losing Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave to the NFL Draft. The influx of wide receivers into the program has created a tight competition for the second and third spot behind breakout superstar Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

More Ohio State updates

In addition to the discussion surrounding Kam Babb’s injury, Ryan Day provided an injury update on safety Josh Proctor and broke down what his return process looks like.

“He’s working his way back into some drills as we get back off of spring break,” said Day. “I don’t know if he’ll be full by the end of spring, he’s working through his rehab and we’re looking forward to getting him back in the drills as we push him through the middle of spring.

“We’re going to make sure that we are always on the side of getting them healthy. And there’s still body reps, there’s walkthroughs, there’s meetings, there’s opportunities for them to learn that way. And then there’s the whole preseason that we have a bunch of time to get going in that area. We’d love to get them in the field but we’re going to make sure that they’re healthy before we do that.”
