Quarterback Quinn Ewers shocked the college football world when he announced he will be reclassifying to the 2021 class and enrolling at Ohio State for this season. Now, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has revealed the plan for Ewers as the season nears.

Day: Ewers will be brought along slowly

After reclassifying, Ewers, who was previously rated as the top 2022 prospect, was rated as the number two overall prospect in the 2021 class by On3. Due to him joining the team just weeks before the season gets underway, Ewers is not expected to have an impact on the field for Ohio State this season. Right now, Ohio State is focused on getting Ewers comfortable within the program.

Head coach Ryan Day understands that Ewers has had a lot thrown at him in recent weeks. A simple and slow approach with Ewers is the plan right now for Ohio State.

“We’re just going to bring him along,” Day said on Wednesday. “There’s a lot going on right now with Quinn, a lot coming at him. I think he’s done a really good job so far just jumping into it. He’s shown respect of the guys around him, and I think the guys appreciate that. We’ve been getting some work with him in at the end of practices. He’s been jumping into some individual drills and picking everything up really fast. He’s certainly drinking through a fire hose, so I think the guys on the team appreciate that.

“He doesn’t have the recruits that were in his class, he kind of jumped ahead. So I think he is a resilient young man.”

Despite his status as a top prospect, Ewers is unlikely to play much this season

Chad Simmonds, On3’s national director of football recruiting, does not expect Ewers to see the field this season.

“It shouldn’t really impact Ohio State all that much this season with him coming in weeks before the first game,” Simmons said. “He is a special talent, and the number one player in the country for multiple reasons. But he’s not going to show up at Ohio State weeks before the season starts and be expected to make a significant impact.

“What this does for him though is start the clock on when he can be eligible for the NFL Draft. Of course, the NIL is the biggest reason all this happened. So he will benefit financially from that as well when he officially starts at Ohio State. If all works out perfectly for him, he will be at Ohio State for three seasons, starting two, making money because of NIL. And then a young NFL draftee in 2024.”
