Usually head coaches are on the receiving end of questions at media days. But at the Big Ten media day, Ohio State basketball head coach Chris Holtmann flipped the script and joined the media to ask Buckeyes players Kyle Young and EJ Verdell questions.

Holtmann began by asking Young, a fifth-year senior, about the “crazy swag and style” of his head coach. After a quick laugh at Holtmann’s question, Young jokingly complimented the “drip” of his Ohio State head coach.

“Yeah, I actually can a little bit,” Young joked. “We’ve had a few interviews today where that’s gotten brought up. I think me and EJ both commented on coach Holtmann’s drip. Not just on the court but off the court. We see him walking into the gym, he’s always got some new kicks on. And he’s always got an icy suit on.”

Following Young’s answer, Holtmann hit junior forward EJ Verdell with the toughest question a player can be asked about his head coach. Holtmann asked Verdell what his least favorite thing about his Ohio State head coach is.

After a brief pause, Verdell again took the moment to shout out the “drip” of Holtmann.

“Got to be very careful,” Verdell said while laughing at Holtmann’s question. “He doesn’t give me tips on his fashion style. I wish I had the same as him because he says he has drip.”

Holtmann is entering his fifth season at Ohio State

In June of 2017, Ohio State hired Holtmann, formerly Butler’s coach, as the new head coach of the Buckeyes. Since joining the Buckeyes, Hotmann has continued to find ways to win games on the court. In his first season, Holtmann led Ohio State to a 25-9 overall record with a 15-3 mark in the Big Ten. During his second season, Ohio State was 20-15 and 8-12 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes made the second round of the NCAA Tournament in each of Holtmann’s first two seasons.

The 2019-2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Ohio State still was 21-10 and 11-9 in the Big Ten in Holtmann’s third season. Last season, Ohio State was 21-10 but lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Teams coached by Holtmann have won at least 20 games in eight consecutive seasons. Last year, Holtmann was a finalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year award.

Prior to joining the Buckeyes, Holtmann had a 70-31 career coaching record at Butler. In his ten years as a head coach at Butler, Ohio State, and Gardner-Webb, Holtmann has a career record of 201-128.
