Cibolo (Texas) Steele three-star wide receiver Royal Capell was eager to get his official visit to Oklahoma State started. So eager that he scheduled it for the second weekend of April instead of waiting until this summer.

And just a few short days after visiting Stillwater, Capell has committed to the Cowboys over Oklahoma, Missouri, Cincinnati, and Oregon. OSU had been near the top of his list for quite some time, and his visit only solidified that.

“Ever since they came to the school,” he told On3 of when the Cowboys moved up his list. “Coach Gundy came here personally the week after I officially got offered by Coach Dunn. And that that was just a big thing to me with the head coach coming here. That means they’re pretty interested.

… That kind of that already put them toward the top of my radar and then really just leading up to the visits ever since they offered me, they’ve kinda stayed on me more than any other school with calls and texts every day.”

Relationships and consistency were the key for Capell

The consistency was a major factor for Capell, who had a feeling he was going to commit even before his visit.

“I had the feeling before the visit,” he said. “And honestly after Saturday sitting down and talking with Coach Dunn and breaking everything down, I knew. He talked to me and my mom, and before I could even tell my mom that I had that feeling, she kind of nudged and me and was like ‘This is the school.’ That’s just ultimately when it did it for me, and I knew I was gonna be a Cowboy.”

In addition to that, the atmosphere and vibe in Stillwater gave him a home feeling he couldn’t ignore.

“My coach, he told me Stillwater and Cibolo are a lot alike. And when I got there, I saw you’ve got the city [of Stillwater] and then the real big city isn’t too far away. So it’s almost just like where I am now.”

The relationships he’s developed not only with Dunn, his position coach, but also with Gundy made him feel like he could trust them to take him where he wants to go.

“The biggest thing with Coach Gundy with me was he just kept it real,” Capell said. “And anytime he said something, he also could back it up and prove it with the facts and just his energy. When you’re around him, he’s just a good guy, and him and also Coach Dunn, they’re real genuine people.”
