Oregon tight end Cam McCormick is returning for an eighth season. If that wasn’t crazy enough, he was also granted ninth season of eligibility, too. That’s right, a ninth season.

To clarify, he isn’t going to play in his ninth season. McCormick redshirted his true freshman year in 2016, played as a redshirt freshman in 2017 and suffered injuries in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. He was able to play some last season and had the most active year of his career in 2022 with three touchdowns to his credit.

Overall, he’s played in 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022. With the extra season of eligibility that COVID blanket waiver provides, he’s able to return for the 2023 season.

“I’ve thought about it; it’s a tough decision,” McCormick said, via OregonLive.com after Friday’s practice. “I’m not totally keen on what my decision is going to be yet. I’m going to continue to enjoy this game with my teammates and make the decision after the game. … I couldn’t imagine doing nine.

“If anything, I applied for it just to have it after Ohio State last year. I tore my Achilles and thankfully was able to get it. The option’s there, I do have it. Whether I use it, it’s in the air. Thinking about returning for a year eight.”

McCormick will be the roster for Oregon’s season-opener next year against Portland State on Sept. 2 – it goes without saying – he’ll make history as Oregon’s longest tenured player. And that’s not even taking into account his potential return for 2024.
