Friday night’s game between Oregon and Oregon State would’ve been Spencer Webb’s senior night. The former Ducks tight end passed away in July 2022 as he was preparing for his junior season, and the program has honored him in multiple ways since.

During Friday’s rivalry game, Oregon will again pay tribute to Webb.

The Ducks unveiled their uniform combination for the Week 12 game, featuring a “4” in a spider web on each sleeve — an homage to Webb, who wore No. 4. The fingers also have a message: “Growth,” “Sacrifice,” “4 Spence,” “4 Ever.”

Webb was a beloved figure in Eugene during his career with the Ducks. After his death, the program and other Pac-12 teams paid tribute to him. Teams across the conference painted the four-yard markers yellow to honor his planned number change from 18 to 4. Additionally, coach Dan Lanning said the Ducks found ways to honor Webb, including a climb up “Spencer’s Butte” to end summer workouts.

Webb joined Oregon in 2018, but redshirted that season and then only played one game due to injury during the COVID-19-impacted 2020 campaign. He was gearing up for his redshirt junior season at the time of his passing.

In two seasons, Webb had 31 receptions for 296 yards and four touchdowns.

At Pac-12 Media Day this year, Lanning noted there are players on the team that didn’t get the chance to meet Webb. However, that adds to the special nature of the new tradition of climbing “Spencer’s Butte” because it allows others to learn about his legacy.

“There’s gonna be some guys that go on that walk that didn’t know Spencer, right? There’s gonna be some guys that climb that hill that didn’t know him personally, and there’s gonna be a lot of people that were impacted by Spencer every day when we climb that Butte,” Lanning said. “That means a lot to me. I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for us to express the importance of life and taking advantage of the time while you’re here on this earth for our guys.”

Oregon and Oregon State will square off in their annual rivalry matchup on Nov. 24 at 8:30 p.m. ET on FOX. The Ducks can lock up a spot in the Pac-12 Championship with a victory over the rival Beavers and set up a rematch against Washington with a possible spot in the College Football Playoff on the line.
