SMU point guard Zhuric Phelps has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

Phelps enters the transfer portal after spending all three years of his college career with the Mustangs and earning All-AAC Second-Team honors last season.

After averaging 3.8 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game as a true freshman coming off of the bench for SMU, Phelps would become a perennial starter and scorer in his following two seasons in Dallas. Appearing in 63 games with 62 starts.

Phelps had a breakout year in 2022 for the Mustangs, leading the team with a career-high 17.5 points per game which also ranked sixth in the conference. Also grabbing 3.7 rebounds per game and leading SMU with 3.2 assists and an impressive 2.3 steals per game. Another career high that also led the AAC and ranked No. 16 in the nation. Making a major impact on both ends of the floor with 12 games with 20+ points and 17 games with multiple steals (including a whopping six outings with 4+ steals).

This past season Phelps was the team’s leading scorer yet again with 14.8 points, 2.7 assists, 1.9 steals, and a career-high 4.1 rebounds per game. Scoring his 1,000th career point in February against Tulane and scoring in double-figures on 29 different occasions. Departing from the program tied for fourth all time averaging 1.7 steals per game and ranking seventh all time with 158 career steals.

Phelps played high school hoops at Duncanville High School School in Texas, where he was an unrated, unranked prospect for the 2021 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. But two recruiting media companies had him ranked as a top 10 player in Texas and top 25 point guard in the nation for his class. Named Mr. Basketball in Texas in his senior season at Duncanville.

At 6-foot-3, 175 pounds Phelps has proven he can get buckets and pick pockets, making him one of the best two way perimeter players to enter the transfer portal this offseason that will likely attract a lot of attention from various programs. Having appeared in 95 games with 1,137 points scored in his three-year collegiate career.
