Temple Owls quarterback D’Wan Mathis will enter the transfer portal for the second time, according to reports on Thursday. Mathis, a former four-star prospect, transferred from Georgia after the 2020 season and played seven games for the Owls.

Mathis missed Temple’s game versus Houston after reinjuring his ankle. The Owls were still hoping the redshirt freshman would be able to go this weekend versus Tulsa.

“I know there’s improvement…I don’t know the extent to that improvement,” head coach Rod Carey said on Monday. “But I know there is improvement.”

This season, Mathis had 1,223 yards, six passing touchdowns, four picks, as well as, 82 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. He completed 59.5% of his passes. As a true freshman at Georgia, the Oak Park, Michigan native got into three games and completed 12 passes in relief duties.

The Owls are 3-7 this season and ninth in the American Athletic Conference.

D’Wan Mathis goes back to the transfer portal

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the school no longer has a scholarship obligation. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is doesn’t have to provide a scholarship anymore.
