SEC Stat Cat Clark Brooks on the things Conner Weigman Does Well

Texas A&M was expecting to be without Conner Weigman for some time, with the quarterback suffering a leg injury during Saturday’s win against Auburn. However, more testing has been done and it’s reportedly worse than the Aggies thought.

According to Billy Liucci of TexAgs, Weigman is set to miss the entire 2023 season. He will need multiple months to recover from the injury and at best, will be back on the field next fall when Texas A&M begins the 2024 season.

Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle was the first to report the severity of the injury.

“QB Conner Weigman’s foot injury is, in fact, a season-ender for the emerging SEC star,” Liucci said. “Weight-bearing bone and roughly a 3.5 month recovery.”

The first timeline given on Weigman was around a month, potentially keeping him out of some critical games Texas A&M has on the schedule. However, being out the entire season is a major blow for the Aggies.

Weigman was having a decent year in his first full season as the starting quarterback. In four games, he was completing nearly 69% of his throws with 979 yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions. He did not get to finish out the Auburn game as the injury occurred late in the second quarter.

Arkansas is next on the schedule as Texas A&M travels up north to Arlington for a rivalry game inside AT&T Stadium. Weigman will not be suiting up to play and Max Johnson will have to be the guy for head coach Jimbo Fisher.

Johnson is one of the more experienced backups in the entire country, potentially being a huge piece for Texas A&M this year. Most teams would have to panic if their starting quarterback was ruled out for the rest of the season with an injury. Fisher will be thankful for having Johnson on the roster and hopes the success can continue with him running the offense.

Last season saw Johnson emerge from fall camp as the starter but an injury of his own forced him onto the sidelines and for Weigman to take over. Johnson played in four games last year and three of them were starts. He threw for 517 yards on 71 attempts, adding three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Fisher still needs to get results following his disappointing 5-7 season from a year ago. At least on the offensive end, Johnson will now be the one leading the troops.
