Texas Longhorns Fall To Washington in College Football Playoff | What's Ahead for Steve Sarkisian?

A great season for Texas came to an end Monday night as the Longhorns’ rally against Washington came up just short. Despite the loss, Texas finished the season 12-2 and with a Big 12 title. You can certainly make the argument that Texas is back after the year it had, but Johnny Manziel doesn’t see it that way.

The former Texas A&M star and Heisman trophy winner took to Twitter to troll the Longhorns following their loss to Washington.

Manziel posted this on Twitter early Tuesday morning: “11/30/2024 we’ll see just how back you guys are.”

That date is of course the date of the next Texas A&M vs. Texas matchup. The Longhorns are joining the SEC beginning in 2024 and will close out next year’s regular season at Texas A&M.

The Texas A&M vs. Texas rivalry was at one point one of the most intense rivalaries in college football. The two teams played every year from 1915 until 2011, before the Aggies left the Big 12 and went to the SEC.

Now Texas is making that same move, going from the Big 12 to the SEC. It’s safe to say Johnny Manziel is excited for the matchup.

Manziel was at Texas A&M in the 2011 season when the Aggies most recently played Texas, but he did not play in that game. He redshirted that year, before becoming one of the best quarterbacks in college football history.

Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy in 2012, before being a first-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Mike Elko reveals message to Texas A&M players after taking over as head coach

Texas A&M hired Mike Elko to try to take the Aggies program to the next level.

Elko was previously the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M, before spending two seasons as the head coach at Duke.

He recently shared what his message has been to players after returning to College Station to lead the Aggies program.

“We’ve got to become what we’re capable of becoming,” Elko said on the ESPN broadcast during Wednesday’s Texas Bowl. “I think that’s the biggest thing. I think this program is capable of being a team that’s in the Playoff and competing for national championships every year. But we’re not that right now. We’ve got to recognize that, and we’ve got to roll up our sleeves and go to work to become what we should be.”

Elko knows what it takes to win in College Station. He was on Jimbo Fisher’s staff as defensive coordinator from 2018-21 when the Aggies won eight games four straight seasons — including nine-win campaigns in 2018 and the COVID-impacted 2020 season. Now, as the College Football Playoff is getting ready to expand to 12 teams next year, he wants Texas A&M to be right in the middle of the race for a national title.
