While the 2023 recruiting class was not as highly ranked as the 2022 one, head coach Jimbo Fisher was able to find a few great players. One of those was defensive back Jayvon Thomas, being a huge in-state win for Texas A&M. Other regional powers were fighting for Thomas’ signature but the Aggies found a way to get him to College Station.

Fisher was asked how Thomas is looking early in fall camp, having nothing but positive words to say. One word stands out more than others, especially since Fisher is talking about a freshman — consistency. If Thomas is already gaining attention for his consistency, Texas A&M has a special player.

“Just consistency,” Fisher said. “Natural football player. He has been outstanding. Competed and played.”

Thomas played high school football at Dallas (TX) South Oak Cliff, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 136 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

While Thomas played on both sides of the ball, Fisher plans on deploying him as a defensive back.

A winning culture is being brought to Texas A&M with him. Thomas won back-to-back state championships with South Oak Cliff, being a huge accomplishment for the area. He will be hoping more success follows him from the Dallas area and into the college game.

Jimbo Fisher happy with freshman defensive back group

Thomas is not the only freshman defensive back Fisher is impressed with. The entire group is performing well to this point of fall camp according to the head coach. A total of three DBs were signed, all ranking inside the top 150 of the On3 Industry Rankings.

All of performing well early in their Texas A&M careers.

“That whole group of young guys is really good,” Fisher said. “They’re going to play and help us. They’re going to be really good players. They’re natural. They hustle, they listen, they learn. They play hard, they’re instinctive.”

Bravion Rodgers and Dalton Brooks join Thomas in the 2023 class. All three are from the state of Texas as well, with Fisher not having to go too far. Breaking them down by exact position, Thomas and Rodgers are likely cornerbacks while Brooks is projected to be a safety.

An already talented room, adding freshman depth makes the defensive back situation that much better for Texas A&M.
