Texas A&M got a huge boost last week, as prized recruit Lebbeus Overton reclassified and decided to join Texas A&M a year early.

Overton, a five-star defensive lineman according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average, had a chance to be the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2023. However, he instead opted to take his talents to join Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies as part of the class of 2022.

In a press conference earlier this week, Fisher detailed what the signing of Overton means to Texas A&M.

“It wasn’t late, it was just early,” stated Fisher, when asked about Overton joining the team at this stage. “It was early, it was early because we were recruiting for the year before. And then they reclassified. I mean, that was them. Until you, I mean you would take them either way. But you were recruiting for next year and we were on him very hard. They said, you know, once they said there’s a possibility, I said okay, let us know because I’ve heard that before. I mean, a whole year man. Half a year we’ve seen. A whole year? Whoo. I’ll tell you what, I’m glad I wasn’t 16 doing all that. And he’s a tremendous, tremendous student. That’s a heck of an accomplishment. Never like that, never had it because never had a guy come out that early. But never had him do the academics a full year early, you know what I’m saying? It’s tremendous.

“We were really recruiting for the next year and we’ve been on him, just happened that that’s what they elected to do.”

Of course, Fisher is elated Overton is deciding to join the Aggies as this stage. Continuing, the Texas A&M coach spoke about what makes the five-star prospect special.

“Size, speed, athleticism, knowledge. Complete athlete,” started Fisher. “You know, he’s a tremendous basketball player. You’re getting a great guy with size and twitch. Power, speed. Agility, great flexibility. Intelligent, competitive, tough, physical. I mean, he’s got all the tools. He’s got all the tools.”

In choosing Texas A&M, Overton picked the Aggies over programs like the Georgia Bulldogs and Oregon Ducks. There’s no doubt that Fisher thinks highly of the young defensive lineman, and his commitment reaffirms the Aggies coach’s impressive recruiting ability.

Jimbo Fisher has a lot of pressure on him to capture a championship at Texas A&M in the coming seasons. Luckily, players like Lebbeus Overton joining the Aggies will go a long way towards achieving that goal.
