When it comes to draft prospects, sometimes all you need to do is look the part. Professional teams can teach players to have the skills even if they come into the league with only the unteachables like size, speed, or strength. Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher has been putting players in the NFL for some time now. At a Houston Touchdown Club Luncheon, Fisher he says he knows exactly what NFL teams are looking for.

“I’ve had so many first round guys and guys that have made it,” said Fisher. “When I left Florida State, we had 52 guys in the league. We had as many as anybody and so I know what they look like, how they do, and you use that experience. How you develop guys and where you get them to.”

While he highlighted his success in Tallahassee, Fisher is just now starting to see some fruition from his A&M program. OL Kenyon Green was selected 15th by the Houston Texans in this year’s NFL Draft. He’s the first Aggie first round pick under Fisher, but Jimbo says there are more on the way.

“I’ve had plenty,” he said. “We’re starting our first rotation. Our first first round pick came in right now and that was our first full class. Hopefully he’ll go and we’ll get more and more guys in the draft. That means you usually have better players and we can play better.”

To Fisher, that dynamic is “big time” in A&M’s recruitments and evaluations. There are just some things that you can’t coach a player to have. A&M’s recruiting decisions with certain players could wind down to that matter of fact. Even so, it’s not an exact science.

“Being in the first round is a picky thing. Nobody knows what’s going to happen,” said Fisher.

With a Top-10 class every season under Fisher in On3’s Consensus Recruiting Rankings, including the No. 1 class in 2022, more and more talent will be debuting on Kyle Field from here on out.
