Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher gushed as he talked about tight end Jalen Wydermyer. The junior was expected to be a big part of the Aggies passing attack this season, but got off to somewhat of a slow start.

He has since rectified that. After failing to record a touchdown through the first four games, he now has a combined four over the past four. That includes a two-score performance in a victory against South Carolina this past week.

“He’s learned to be a big player,” Fisher said. “He has a big body, he’s athletic, he has hands and can run after the catch. He’s really playing like he’s capable of playing and he’s a weapon.”

The 6-foot-5, 255-pound tight end was coming off of somewhat of a breakout season in 2020. He finished that year with 46 catches for 506 yards and six touchdowns. He was named to the All-SEC second team for his efforts.

The Texas native and former four-star recruit also boasted offers from powers such as Alabama, Ohio State and Georgia in 2019. He immediately made an impact as a true freshman, when he also finished with six touchdowns.

He leads all Aggies players with 353 yards receiving this year, though Ainias Smith is right behind him with 347. The big-bodied junior has become a favorite target of quarterback Zach Calzada, who took over in Week 2 following an injury to Haynes King.

After dropping its first two games in conference play and falling out of the AP poll, Texas A&M stunned the nation by beating then-No. 1 Alabama. That was the beginning of what is now a three-game winning streak. The No. 14 Aggies will have an opportunity to increase that to four after their bye week when they face Auburn on Nov. 6.

The Tigers are currently 2-1 in the SEC and above A&M in the standings, so that game represents a chance to the Aggies to further move up. As such, Jimbo Fisher and his squad could use a couple more touchdowns from Jalen Wydermyer in that one.
