This week, reports surfaced that Haynes King had gained an edge in the Texas A&M quarterback competition. Jimbo Fisher poured some cold water on that idea, though.

During a press conference, Fisher confirmed King isn’t exclusively taking reps with the No. 1s. Instead, he has King, Max Johnson and Connor Weigman rotating with the different units.

“I did hear somebody said [that]. … I said no, they rotate days and take exactly the same number,” Fisher said.

But in the midst of the rotations, has King gotten more reps with the ones?

“We’re rotating guys and they’re doing the same things,” Fisher said. “So, no.”

King saw action in two games last year before suffering an injury, meaning Zach Calzada got a majority of the snaps for the Aggies. But Calzada transferred to Auburn, opening the door for King, Johnson or Weigman to take the starting job this season.

Johnson played the last two years at LSU before entering the transfer portal. Last year as a sophomore, he totaled 2,815 yards and 27 touchdowns in 12 games for the Tigers under Ed Orgeron before making his way to College Station.

Weigman was a highly touted recruit and a big piece of Texas A&M’s No. 1-ranked recruiting class, according to the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking. He was a five-star recruit and the No. 28 player in the nation, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

JD PicKell predicts the winner of Texas A&M’s quarterback competition

With Texas A&M facing a major decision on who will be starting quarterback for the 2022 season, On3’s J.D. PicKell weighed in with his prediction. The two front-runners for the job in College Station are last year’s starter Haynes King — who is returning from an injury that only let him start four games last season — and incoming LSU transfer Max Johnson.

“Haynes King has probably the highest upside of the entire group,” opened PicKell. “Elite athlete, crazy tools, a lot of unknowns. Max Johnson, more of the high-floor kind of guy. And so for Jimbo Fisher, what he wants in his offense is a guy who makes good decisions, a guy who’s gonna be accurate and ultimately have an efficient offense in place.

“To me, choosing between Haynes King and Max Johnson is the choice between do you want a fast car or do you want a Volkswagen? Haynes King is the hot rod. Haynes King is going to be fast and furious and do a lot of things for you really, really well. However, are you willing to live with the mistakes that he makes? Are you willing to deal with the growing pains?”
