Jimbo Fisher did what he thought was best for the health of Haynes King after the Texas A&M quarterback suffered a shoulder injury Saturday against South Carolina.

The Aggies trailed 24-21 with 14:12 remaining at the time, but Fisher opted to let true freshman Conner Weigman finish out the game. In his postgame media session following the 30-24 loss, the A&M coach explained why he felt letting King rest was the right decision.

“I didn’t want to risk it,” Fisher said. “They couldn’t give me enough of an evaluation. They thought his shoulder popped out and then came back in. When you’re a quarterback on your throwing shoulder right there without getting an exam, I didn’t want to risk putting him (back in). I didn’t think it was the right thing to do. He kept trying to fight to come back in the game and I thought Conner was doing a nice job in the game.

“…But it was not worth the risk of the future of (King’s) career, especially on your throwing shoulder without getting an MRI or something to show me actually what’s in there and what’s wrong, if anything. There may not be, but it wasn’t worth the risk.”

Fisher’s assessment of Haynes King’s injury did not offer any clues as to whether to quarterback will be available to play this coming Saturday against Ole Miss. That will likely be determined later in the week once the quarterback undergoes more testing.

This is not the first injury King has dealt with this season, as he injured his foot in a Week 6 loss to Alabama. However, Haynes King did not miss any time as a result of that injury, and the Aggies will hope for the best on his shoulder.

Prior to leaving the game, King was 17-of-32 passing for 178 yards, a touchdown and an interception. If he is ultimately unable to go, look for Weigman, the No. 4 quarterback in the 2022 class according to On3 Consensus, to get the start.

Texas A&M is set to kick off against Ole Miss 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday in College Station.
