After passing for over 2,500 yards, rushing for just under 500 yards and scoring 27 touchdowns as a junior, Anthony Maddox became a hot name on the recruiting trail. Over a dozen schools offered the four-star quarterback out of Hattiesburg (Miss.) Oak Grove before he narrowed it down to Alabama, Penn State and Texas A&M.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound junior didn’t waste any time to make his decision. Alabama was actually the first to offer Maddox during his sophomore year. Penn State offered early in January. Then Texas A&M pulled the trigger a week ago. That is the offer he was waiting for.

Jimbo Fisher, Bobby Petrino and the Aggies started showing heavy interest in Maddox in the middle of January and after talking daily for a couple of weeks, Texas A&M offered and Maddox has committed to the SEC program.

“Texas A&M wanted me to commit the day they offered me, so I know they wanted me,” Maddox told On3. “We have been talking every day, they have really shown me they want me and I was ready to get on board.”

Maddox grew up following Fisher at Florida State

Maddox is from Mississippi, but he grew up a Florida State fan. He has followed Fisher and his development of quarterbacks.

“I love what Coach Fisher did with Jameis Winston, EJ Manuel, Deandre Francois and a lot of the quarterbacks he worked with at Florida State,” he said. “He is a great coach and one of the best to do it when it comes to working with quarterbacks. … Coach Fisher is known for pushing his guys, making them work and developing his quarterbacks. I am ready to work with him. I want him to turn it up with me and push me to be my best.”

Petrino sees a lot of Lamar Jackson in his game

Petrino, who just recently joined Texas A&M’s staff this winter, was a big factor in this decision as well.

“Coach Petrino is a great offensive mind,” Maddox said. “He said that I remind him of Lamar Jackson and he really wants to work with me. He loves my feet, how I can make any throw and Coach Petrino loved the intangibles I bring to the table.

…With him and Coach Fisher, I get to work with two great offensive minds at Texas A&M. They have coached three Heisman Trophy winners, they have sent quarterbacks to the NFL and those are the kind of coached I want to play for.”

Maddox is locked in with the Aggies

Maddox plans to be back in College Station early in March. He is looking to take three visits to his future home in the spring. His first visit to Texas A&M happened in the fall when the Aggies hosted Florida. He is excited about being part of the Texas A&M program.

“I had a long talk with my dad about this and we feel this is the best decision for me,” Maddox said. “I will play for coaches that coach an explosive offense, I will be at a top program in the SEC and I will help A&M get back to where they want to be.”

Anthony Maddox saw the quarterback dominoes falling as well, and he thought Texas A&M had the whole package he was look for.

“In the end, this is still a business too,” he added. “A lot of great quarterbacks have committed and some are still out there. You have Dylan Raiola and Jadyn Davis still out there, others have committed and I wanted to find my spot and get locked in. Texas A&M wanted me. I want them. This is a great match and the time was right for me to commit to them.”
