In a year where plenty of SEC teams return stars to the quarterback position, Texas A&M does not. However, the Aggies have plenty of options for finding their next one. Redshirt sophomore Haynes King won the position battle in camp and will start Week 1 for Jimbo Fisher. But ESPN’s Pete Thamel doesn’t see an end to Texas A&M’s QB battle quite yet. He still believes LSU transfer Max Johnson and blue-chip freshman Conner Weigman will earn serious snaps at some point this season.

Particularly Weigman, who Thamel claims the Aggies much preferred him to Quinn Ewers when adding a young quarterback this offseason. The college football analyst recently joined Rece Davis on the ESPN College GameDay podcast, where he warned folks to watch out for Weigman.

Here were Pete Thamel’s comments on the show regarding the five-star freshman and the A&M QB battle at large:

“Yeah, I wonder at A&M if Conner Weigman, five-star true freshman from Cypress, TX — they like better than Quinn Ewers. Because when Ewers was in the portal, A&M was like…nope! We’re good. We got Connor. We’re good. So I wonder if that talent — how long it may take.

“Obviously Max Johnson, he’s a more proven commodity than anybody in that quarterback room, right? So Jimbo has some pretty fascinating bullets in the chamber there, you know, to see who he’s going to run out. But don’t underestimate the power of a five-star in-state quarterback.

That is something that the fans, you know, if they do struggle to move the ball — and Haynes King we don’t really know what we don’t know yet, right. Like he’s just, he’s struggled with some injuries. And there isn’t a body of work yet. I’d expect both [Texas A&M] to shuffle some folks in and out this year.”

So possibly a revolving door at QB for Texas A&M. Which makes sense given the differences in their options. King, the named starter, is the veteran of the program, having been with the team for a couple years. Johnson is also experienced and has by far the most production to show for himself, but transferred in from LSU. So he’s a first-year guy in this program. And then Weigman probably has the most talent. Easy to see why Thamel thinks multiple guys will play.

The On3 Consensus – a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies – has five-star quarterback Conner Weigman of Birdgeland (TX) High ranked as the 29th-best player in the nation and No. 4 overall QB.
