Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams has received a contract extension through 2028, the university announced Friday. His deal was originally supposed to run out in 2026, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Brent Zwerneman.

Williams shared SEC Coach of the Year honors with Vanderbilt headman Jerry Stackhouse after leading Texas A&M to a 25-10 overall record and a 15-3 record in conference play. The Aggies were a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament but fell to Penn State in the first round.

“Corey and I are extremely grateful to the Texas A&M System Board of Regents, President Banks and the entire athletic department administrative staff for their belief and support in our program,” Williams said in a statement. “Our family loves the Bryan-College Station community and Aggieland, and we’re grateful for the support of the 12th Man. We’re proud of what our teams have accomplished, which is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our players and staff. We are excited about the future of Texas A&M Basketball and humbled for the opportunity to be a part of it.”

Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork also released a statement on the decision, pointing out the direction of the program under Williams’ leadership as a reason for the extension.

“Buzz Williams is a tremendous leader and role model for our student-athletes, and he’s a great example of Texas A&M’s core values,” Bjork said in the press release. “He’s taken our men’s basketball team to new heights over the past two seasons with even brighter days ahead. It was an easy decision to ensure that Buzz is here in Aggieland for many years to come as we continue our mission of creating opportunities through championship athletics.”

Williams just wrapped up his fourth season at Texas A&M after previously serving as the head coach at Virginia Tech and Marquette. He has a 76-47 overall record in College Station, including a 36-28 record in SEC play during that time. On the whole, he has a 329-202 record in his 16 seasons as a college head coach.

The Aggies’ appearance in the 2023 NCAA Tournament was the program’s first under Williams’ leadership after they just missed out on the big dance in 2022. Williams was vocal at the time about Texas A&M’s absence from the field, but the Aggies didn’t need to do much convincing the next time around after such a strong season.
