The Texas A&M Aggies face elimination in the SEC Tournament on Thursday as they take on the conference top-seed Tennessee in Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Alabama. Dropping their first-round matchup against Mississippi State on Wednesday after ending the regular season strong with an impressive series win over Arkansas.

So far the Aggies have not been able to translate their regular season success to the postseason after entering the conference tournament as the No. 4 seed with 19 SEC wins on the season. Which head coach Jim Schlossnagle opened up about on ESPN’s broadcast of their matchup with the Vols.

“I mean we won two out of three against Arkansas, they’re pretty good. But yeah, I think offensively I mean they they call it an average for a reason, right?” Schlossnagle asked. “That’s the way I’m thinking is that I think our best days are hopefully coming this next inning or certainly coming maybe in the regional. But we’ve hit some balls hard, we’ve had some games where we bunched hits, we just haven’t scored as many runs as we would like and we’ve also played some good teams.”

The Aggies recorded just five hits on their first game of the SEC Tournament that generated three runs, which was not enough to hold off the Bulldogs. And through five innings against the Volunteers, they’ve continued to struggle in the batter’s box with just three hits and one score thanks to a solo home run from Gavin Grahovac. As Schlossnagle opened up about how he looks to motivate his team and get their mojo back on offense.

“I think you just remind them who they are. I just told Jace (LaViolette), man you’re one of the best players in the country. When Burt (Ted Burton) steps in there, it looks like he’s hitting .9000, at least that’s the way I feel,” Schlossnagle joked. “He’s got great presence and energy.”

“And Jace, these guys, they care a lot, right? And they care a lot for A&M, they care a lot for their teammates and so when they don’t succeed then they feel like sometimes they let people down versus just it’s the game and it’s hard,” Schlossnagle added. “But part of the magic of our club is the three guys after the first three, and when the superstars aren’t going, those three older guys normally can pick them up. And right now we’re just in a little bit of a lull I guess, I don’t know.”

Texas A&M will look to get back on track and avoid elimination as they trail Tennessee 3-1 heading into the sixth inning.
