Texas A&M bounced back from their week 3 upset loss to Appalachian State defeating No. 13 Miami Saturday 17-9. The Aggie’s defense was impressive, keeping the Hurricanes out of the end zone the entire game. And the offense was led by quarterback Max Johnson, who got his first start Saturday after Haynes King started the first two weeks of the season for Texas A&M. Head coach Jimbo Fisher spoke on what ultimately led to the decision of switching quarterbacks and giving Johnson the nod.

“He just played with very good consistency, knowing what we we’re doing, knowing what we were doing in our game plan. He played very consistent, was accurate with the ball, and made good decisions,” Fisher said.

Fisher was also asked about how difficult it was to make the decision and broke down the factors that played a role in him no longer being the starter.

“It’s very difficult because quarterbacks tale all the glory and all the blame, and I’m telling you right now by far,” Fisher explained. “And Haynes had some things he could’ve done better and played better, and I’ve said that before, but it was not all him what was going on. And the guys around him could’ve made some plays at times and blocked and did things too so, and we still gotta get a heck of a lot better on offense.”

King threw for 364 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions in a win against Sam Houston State, followed by a 97-yard passing outing in a loss App State where he didn’t reach the end zone or turn the ball over.

Johnson completed 50% of his passes versus Miami for 140 yards and a touchdown in another low-scoring affair for the Aggies. The Aggie’s offense as a whole hasn’t looked very explosive so far this season, and Fisher mentioned that King could still potentially be a part of it moving forward.

“But I thought that was what was best for us to win the game and that’s what we did,” Fisher said. “But Haynes is still very much in our thinking and what’s going on, practiced very well and so did Max, and so did Conner [Weigman].”

King does bring more athleticism and dual-treat ability to the table compared to Johnson, and it’ll be interesting to see how the two are utilized moving forward depending on how the Aggie’s offense looks as the season continues.
