Texas A&M has officially announced Trev Alberts as the school’s newest athletic director. Alberts comes over from Nebraska after just three years.

Texas A&M does have to pay over $4 million to buy out Alberts’ contract with Nebraska. The new Aggies AD leaves Lincoln just one year after hiring new football coach Matt Rhule amid a regbuild for the school’s premier program.

Now, Alberts has a new undertaking as Texas A&M moves into a new era. The school made the hire official, bringing him to the SEC.

“With Trev’s expertise, the Aggies are poised to not only excel on the fields, tracks and courts, but also successfully navigate the multi-faceted intersection of sports, commerce and student-athlete empowerment,” Texas A&M president Mark Welsh said in a statement. “He has a profound understanding of the intricate business of athletics and the evolving landscape of college athletics, particularly in the realm of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL).”

Alberts also released a statement on the decision to leave Nebraska – his alma mater – to make the move to College Station.

“I truly want to express my gratitude to the University of Nebraska — the school and its fans have been and always will be immensely important to me,” Alberts said in a statement. “Nebraska changed my life, and I’m thankful for the incredible 15 years I spent here.”

Ross Bjork was previously Texas A&M’s athletic director but left in favor of the Ohio State job. A move to leave the SEC and join a top Big Ten program, Alberts is now pulling the reverse. He will now lead the Aggies into a new era in college athletics, mainly on the football side.

Alberts will also inherit a brand new football head coach. Bjork conducted a coaching search and landed on Duke‘s Mike Elko. There has been excitement over Elko following the Jimbo Fisher era, believing he can bring some stability and good on-field results back to Texas A&M.

This marks the fourth athletic director Texas A&M has had over the last decade — Eric Hyman, Scott Woodward, and Bjork. Now, Alberts is expected to be the next guy in Aggieville.

Alberts was a player at Nebraska and was one of the best linebackers in the country during his time at Nebraska. He won the Butkus Award following the 1993 season and was a consensus All-American. The Huskers even retired his No. 34.

After a short professional career and a stint in media, Alberts got into administration and was hired by Omaha in 2009. He stayed for over a decade until he earned the Nebraska job, joining the Huskers in 2021.

Alberts will now have to watch from afar while working alongside Elko and others inside of the Texas A&M athletic department.
