Madisonville (Texas) four-star athlete Lorenzo Johnson announced his decommitment from Texas Tech on Monday night. He was previously pledged to the Red Raiders since Feb. 4.

Johnson is the No. 780 overall prospect and No. 72 athlete in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 117 player in Texas and a three-star recruit.

On3 rates Johnson higher than other recruiting services, according to the Industry Comparison. Per the 2024 On300, Johnson is the No. 286 overall prospect, No. 19 athlete and No. 57 player in Texas. He is also a four-star recruit.

“After having a talk with dad and family, this has been a hard but necessary decision, and I will be decommitting from Texas Tech and reopen(ing) my recruitment,” Johnson wrote in a statement published to Twitter. “I want to thank the entire Texas Tech University staff for everything they’ve done for me and my family, especially coach (James) Blanchard and coach (Joey) McGuire, who both played a big role in my recruitment.

“I am extremely grateful for coach (Marcel) Yates, coach (Ryan) Conry, coach (Tim) DeRuyter and the rest of the Texas Tech football staff for believing in my talents and providing me with an opportunity to play football at the next level. Texas Tech remains one of my top schools.”

More on Johnson’s recruitment and Texas Tech’s 2024 class

The 5-foot-11, 165-pound recruit currently holds multiple offers, in addition to Texas Tech. They include Houston and UNLV.

Texas Tech’s 2024 recruiting class now contains six players. They include Houston (Texas) St. Thomas four-star running back Johann Cardenas, Lubbock (Texas) Lubbock-Cooper three-star interior offensive lineman Holton Hendrix, Hawley (Texas) three-star athlete Chandlin Myers and Lubbock (Texas) Shallowater three-star interior offensive lineman Kasen Long. Odessa (Texas) four-star wide receiver Ivan Carreon and Hutto (Texas) three-star quarterback Will Hammond are the others.

Johnson has an On3 NIL Valuation of $23K. The On3 NIL Valuation is the industry’s leading index that sets high school and college athletes’ projected annual value (PAV). The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
