Big 12 play has just begun for head coach Chris Beard and the Texas Longhorns but the transfer portal has already taken away a player. It comes to the joy of Beard’s old school, Texas Tech.

Forward Jaylon Tyson committed to the Red Raiders on Sunday he told On3’s Joe Tipton. He originally committed to Texas Tech back in May 2020 but made the switch to Austin when Beard announced he would become the head coach of Texas. Now, the process has come full circle for Tyson and he will play college basketball in Lubbock.

Tyson has since officially announced his commitment via Twitter.

Tyson originally entered the transfer portal on Dec. 27, one day before the Christmas break ended for the Longhorns. He played in eight total games for Texas.

Coming out of high school, Tyson was ranked the No. 33 overall player on the On3 Consensus and the No. 8 small forward in the country. He is originally from Plano, TX, and held offers from the likes of Creighton, Houston, Oklahoma, TCU, and Texas A&M.

Tyson played a career-high 14 minutes against Houston Baptist in the Longhorns’ season opener. He went five of five from the field, scoring 11 points and adding three rebounds.

Transfer portal background information for Texas Tech Red Raiders, Tyson

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such as contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.
