Davidson transfer shooting guard Grant Huffman officially committed to the Vanderbilt Commodores on Thursday evening, according to Jeff Borzello of ESPN. One of the more complete guard prospects in the portal, Huffman averaged 12.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game last year for the Davidson Wildcats, the former home of Steph Curry.

It hasn’t taken long at all for current Vandy head coach Mark Byington to get to work in assembling a new squad in his new home in Nashville. He hasn’t been on the job for very long, but the transfer portal waits for no one. The former JMU head coach has been busy hitting the portal and piecing together his roster in Nashville.

Huffman will join a couple of former Virginia Tech standouts on the Commodores roster, shooting guard MJ Collins and small forward Tyler Nickel, the all-time leading scorer in VHSL history. Collins averaged 29.5 minutes per game this year for VT, stuffing the stat sheet with 7.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.

Nickel started seven games this season for the Hokies, shooting 39% from three-point range (an improvement from 22.2% at UNC). He also dished out a career-high six assists in Virginia Tech’s 75-41 throttling of Virginia on February 19th.

In 2022-2023, Huffman served as the team captain for the Wildcats, averaging 10.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.1 steals per game in league play. He ranked among the league leaders in the A-10 in assists (11th), assist/turnover ratio (3rd), and steals (14th). Huffman scored in double figures 16 times for Davidson.

In 2021-2022, Huffman appeared in all 31 games for Davidson, making five starts. He once again showed off his complete skill set, setting personal bests for scoring, steals, assists, rebounds, and minutes played. He stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, six rebounds, and four assists in his team’s home win over the Saint Louis Billikens (February 19th).

As a freshman in 2020-2021, he played in all 22 games off the bench, shooting 41.2% from three-point range.

Huffman played his high school basketball for St. Edward’s in Cleveland, Ohio. He helped guide them to a No. 1 ranking in the Cleveland Boys’ Basketball Top 25 in 2019-2020. Huffman also guided St. Edward’s to the state semifinals as a junior. In the 2018-2019 season, he averaged 14.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 2.0 steals per game.
