Not many freshman quarterbacks have been playing in college football this season but one of the more impressive ones has been AJ Swann of Vanderbilt. He has been the guy for head coach Clark Lea since the middle of September after being a member of the 2022 recruiting class. However, he is not expected to play on Saturday.

Vanderbilt has another SEC East matchup on the schedule, traveling to Lexington to face off against Kentucky. Lea confirmed on Tuesday that Swann would not be able to play for the Commodores, leaving Mike Wright as the starter.

As for a timeline, Lea said he is hopeful Swann can return next week against Florida. At the very least, the freshman will not be out for the rest of the season. After the Gators, in-state rival Tennessee is the final regular season game in Nashville.

Swann has appeared in eight games for Vanderbilt this season, completing 57.5% of his throws. Just under 2,000 passing yards, he has 10 touchdowns and just two interceptions. While they might not be the most eye-popping numbers, Swann has been impressive for a freshman quarterback in the SEC.

The On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting services, rated Swann as a three-star prospect out of Canton, GA. He was the No. 25 quarterback in the 2022 class and No. 449 overall. Swann was the fourth highest-rated recruit to join Vanderbilt’s program this season.

Now with Wright taking over for Swann, he still has some experience playing this season. In seven games, the junior quarterback has thrown for 654 yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions. Wright will surpass 100 attempts at some point against Kentucky, currently hitting at a 58.3% clip.
