Virginia Tech is embarking on a new future with Brent Pry as head coach which means everything is new to every player on the field, whether they were with the program or not last season.

When asked about the youth and unknowns at the quarterback position following Saturday’s spring game, the first-year Hokies’ head coach acknowledged he liked what he saw from Marshall transfer Grant Wells.

“Yeah obviously we got to continue to get better there but I thought Grant ran the offense pretty well,” Pry said. “You know you feel like when its summer and into preseason camp, by September, what can he look like out there?”

The Virginia Tech coach — who has promised an open quarterback competition that will continue through fall camp — was also complimentary of two of the young passers on the roster, redshirt freshman Tahj Bullock and true freshman Devin Farrell.

“I thought the two young kids, the dual-threat guys did some good things with their feet, and as a defensive coordinator, I understand that’s hard to defend sometimes,” Pry said. “I was pleased with what I saw out of those guys.”

Brent Pry updates quarterback competition following Virginia Tech spring game

Virginia Tech has a new coach for the 2022 campaign and former Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry hasn’t made up his mind at the starting quarterback position this early in the offseason.

While everything is speculation as of now, Pry aggressively added Grant Wells (Marshall) and Jason Brown (South Carolina) through the transfer portal and those two got most of the snaps on Saturday.

When asked if he’s made a firm decision at naming the Hokies’ 2022 signal caller following the spring game on Saturday, Pry gave a blunt and honest assessment of where his team stands.

“No I wouldn’t say that,” Pry said. “I thought Grant played really well today. Obviously Jason and the offensive line struggled a little bit for the White group and that was tough on Jason. But Grant obviously threw some good balls and had a good first half out there. But we will evaluate the film and continue to work though the summer and we will take that competition into preseason camp.”

Last season, Virginia Tech struggled to move the ball through the air, particularly downfield.

The Hokies finished 2021 ranked No. 112 nationally in passing (176.4 yards per game) and the previous staff became increasingly reluctant to throw the ball. Only eight FBS teams attempted fewer passes in the month of November than the Hokies (19.8 attempts per game).
