Lightning delays Winston Salem Regional matchup between Wake Forest and Maryland

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons have been one of the most dominant teams in all of college baseball for the 2023 campaign. The Demon Deacons earned the No. 1 overall seed heading into the 2023 NCAA Baseball Tournament. The Deacs throttled George Mason on Friday in their first game of the tournament, 12-0. On Saturday night, the Demon Deacons were set to face off against the Maryland Terrapins in their second game of the Winston Salem Regional. It’s going to have to wait, as there was a lightning strike within 12 miles of David F. Couch Ballpark in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

“There was just a lightning strike within 12 miles of David F. Couch Ballpark. Following a decision by the NCAA, and agreed upon by both programs, we will remain in a delay.”

The announcement was posted at 6:10 PM EST. More information will be provided by their Twitter page soon. Wake had two players make the 2023 All-ACC Tournament Team: pitcher Rhett Lowder and first baseman Nick Kurtz.

UPDATE: The Wake Forest Baseball Twitter page posted another update of another lightning strike as of 6:40 PM EST. There was another lightning strike within eight miles of David F. Couch Ballpark. Check out their post below.

UPDATE: The Wake Forest Baseball Twitter page announced that the re-start between the Demon Deacons and Maryland is slated for 10:45 PM EST. So, Wake Forest fans will get some late-night baseball on Saturday night.

The Demon Deacons currently sit at 48-10 overall and they’ve been extremely dominant throughout the 2023 college baseball season. They’re led by the two-time ACC pitcher of the year, Rhett Lowder. Their pitching staff ranked first in the country with a 2.82 ERA and nine shutouts coming into the NCAA Baseball Tournament. Wake Forest also cranked 110 home runs this year and they averaged 8.9 runs per game. The Demon Deacons clinched the 2023 ACC Regular Season crown, the fourth in program history and their first since 1963.
