Incarnate Word quarterback Cameron Ward will transfer to Washington State, he announced Monday evening. He chose the Cougars over Ole Miss, Prairie View A&M and Houston.

Ward is set to reunite with his coach at Incarnate Word, Eric Morris, who recently took the Cougars offensive coordinator job. A sophomore for the Cardinals this past season, Ward finished the season with 4,648 yards, 47 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He led UIW to a Southland Conference title the second round of the FCS playoffs.

In a 55-52 win over Southeastern Louisiana this year, he threw for 610 yards and seven touchdowns — both single-game records at UIW. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound junior, who will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

He is set to join a Washington State squad that finished the 2021 season with a 7-6 record. The Cougars lost their final game of the season to Central Michigan in the Sun Bowl.

Jayden de Laura was the starting quarterback for the Cougars this past season. He had a solid season, recording 2,798 yards and 23 touchdowns. However, he announced Friday that he would enter the transfer portal.

With that in mind, it seems Ward is poised to take over as the starter in 2022. Given his production at the FCS level, that has to get WSU fans excited for next season.

A native of West Columbia, Texas, the quarterback spent his high school career at Columbia High School. He helped his team finish as co-district champions in 2019 and was named all-state honorable mention. In spite of this, he went relatively under the radar before signing with the Cardinals.

Ward is also related to a pair of NFL players in Quandre Diggs (Seattle) and Quintin Jammer (Chargers). The Washington State transfer quarterback will get his first chance to make an impact when the Cougars open their 2022 season on Sept. 3 against the Idaho Vandals.
